From Training to Fight

There is a big difference between training MMA and actually fighting.

In training, you can stop, try again, and work on the details. A fight has a specific day and time. Suddenly, what you have spent months practicing has to work when it really matters.

For Elias, Fit4Fight 4 in Gothenburg was that day.

He had been training for about a year and had actively participated in training sessions for the last six months. The road to the fight had not been without interruptions, but now the fight was set, and it was time to travel to Gothenburg.

Not Just the Fighter Traveling

Adam also joined the trip.

The original plan had been for him to fight, but he didn't get an opponent. Still, he chose to come along.

This also says something about how a fight day works when you are part of a team. Even though only one person is going in to compete, much of the day is spent with others.

On this trip, it was Elias who was fighting for the first time.

The Regular Routines

After arrival, the part of a competition day that the audience rarely sees much of begins.

First, practical matters need to be taken care of.

Weigh-in.

Medical check.

Rules review.

Then, a lot revolves around eating, resting, and waiting.

It’s actually a strange contrast. You have traveled to another country to fight MMA, while large parts of the day consist of quite ordinary things.

You sit.

You eat.

You wait.

And all the while, you know that the fight is getting closer.

When the First Fights Start

The atmosphere changes when the first fights of the event begin.

Then the day shifts from waiting to preparation.

Elias will have his hands wrapped. Gear needs to be in place. The body needs to be warmed up.

As a coach, you also start going through the last details with the fighter.

At this point, the training period is practically over.

It’s not the time to learn anything new.

The task is to get Elias ready to use what he has already trained.

The Last Minutes

Perhaps this is what is most interesting about a first fight.

Not just the fight itself, but everything that happens right before.

You can train technique, sparring, and physical capacity. But the feeling of knowing that you are soon going to compete for real is hard to fully simulate in training.

For Elias, this was the first time.

First weigh-in.

First medical check before a fight.

First warm-up with an actual MMA fight on the other side.

And finally, the first time he would go in and do what he had spent the last year preparing for.

Bound by Battle

Bound by Battle is precisely about this part of MMA.

The fights are of course important, but the story surrounding the fighters is bigger than the minutes inside the fighting area.

It’s the training, the journey, the waiting, the nerves, the people around the fighter, and all the work that happens before the audience sees the finished fight.

This time, we follow Elias through the day when he first gets to feel the difference between training MMA and actually fighting an MMA match.
