The Mule cocktail is a true classic. Originating in the 1940s USA, the Moscow Mule was born out of the desire to promote vodka in the American market – served with lime juice and ginger beer in a distinctive copper mug. The result was a refreshing, easy-to-drink cocktail with a kick, and it marked the beginning of a wave of Mule variants.
Today, we take the Mule concept to Brazil, a country known for its rich cocktail culture and, not least, its national spirit cachaça. Together with the tropical-fruity Brazilian Kiss liqueur, we create two refreshing, aromatic drinks – perfect for warm days or as an exotic addition to any home bar.
What is a Mule?
A Mule follows a simple and successful principle: spirit + lime + ginger beer. It’s a format that allows for creativity, but always maintains a spicy and fresh signature thanks to the ginger beer.
The Mule family includes everything from the classic Moscow Mule (vodka) to the Kentucky Mule (bourbon), London Mule (gin), and Mexican Mule (tequila). With this as inspiration, we now create:
Flavor and Serving
Both drinks are light and aromatic, but have distinct differences:
- Brazilian Mule offers a classic Mule experience with a Brazilian character – slightly drier, fresher, and herbal.
- Brazilian Kiss Mule is rounder, sweeter, and more floral – like a Mule with dessert notes.
Serve them together as a duo at a summer party, or choose based on your mood: the green and fresh vs. the fruity and elegant.
Tips and Variations
- Try adding a dash of Angostura bitters for extra depth in the Brazilian Mule.
- Want it even fresher? Squeeze some lime juice directly into the glass.
- Want to make the Brazilian Kiss Mule even more tropical? Top with a fruit skewer of pineapple and passion fruit.
Conclusion
With these two Mule variants, we show how far the simple format can be stretched – from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro. No matter which you prefer, one thing is certain: ginger, ice, and tropical flavors are a recipe for success.
